Convocation 2026

Thursday, September 11, 11:00 a.m.
Campbell Hall Chapel

Convocation marks the beginning of a new academic year at Columbia Theological Seminary as we welcome new and returning students into our community of learning, worship, and service. It is a time to gather as a community, celebrate the year ahead, and recommit ourselves to the work God has called us to do together.

This year, we are honored to welcome The Rev. Dr. Luke A. Powery, Dean of Duke University Chapel, as our guest preacher.

A nationally recognized preacher, teacher, and scholar, Dr. Powery serves as Dean of Duke University Chapel and Professor of Homiletics and African and African American Studies at Duke University. His scholarship explores the connections between preaching, the Holy Spirit, music, and culture, and he is the author of numerous books on preaching, worship, and Christian life, including the award-winning Becoming Human: The Holy Spirit and the Rhetoric of Race.

Throughout his ministry and academic career, Dr. Powery has preached and lectured in churches, seminaries, and conferences around the world. His work continues to shape conversations around preaching, justice, worship, and Christian witness, making him one of the leading voices in theological education today.

We invite you to join us as we begin the 2026–2027 academic year together in worship, celebrating our students, our mission, and the opportunities that lie ahead.

Immediately following Convocation, the Seminary community is invited to The Refectory in the Richards Center for a Community Celebration Lunch.
