Presidential Leadership Transition

Columbia Theological Seminary is preparing for its next chapter of leadership through a thoughtful, collaborative, and mission-focused transition process. Guided by the Board of Trustees, this work is designed to ensure continuity of leadership, invite perspectives from across the Columbia community, and position the Seminary for a strong future.

This page will serve as a central resource for updates, information, and opportunities for community engagement throughout the presidential transition.

Transition Leadership

Board of Trustees Chair Elizabeth Goodrich has established a Transition Team to guide leadership planning during the period beginning January 1, 2027, and continuing until a Presidential Search Committee is appointed.

The Transition Team is co-chaired by Rodger Nishioka and Rebekah LeMon and includes trustees Brian Henderson, John Oglesby, and Kathy Wolf Reed.

Working closely with Chair Goodrich, the team is responsible for:

Community Engagement

Input from the Columbia community is an important part of the transition process.

The Transition Team has met with the Executive Committee of the Faculty, the President’s Council, and members of the wider Seminary community through a forum and listening session held October 21, 2026.

These conversations are helping inform the team’s recommendations and ensure that the transition reflects the perspectives, priorities, and shared commitments of the Seminary community.

Share Your Perspective
Members of the Columbia community are invited to share questions, reflections, and feedback with the Transition Team by October 31, 2026.

What’s Next

The presidential transition will unfold in two primary phases.

Phase 1: Interim Presidential Leadership
The Transition Team will assess immediate leadership needs, gather community input, and identify an interim president. Its work is expected to conclude with the onboarding of that leader.

Phase 2: Presidential Search
Following the appointment of an interim president, the Board of Trustees will establish a Presidential Search Committee to lead the process of identifying and recommending Columbia’s next president.

Transition Updates

The Seminary will provide periodic updates as the transition progresses. Information about leadership appointments, the presidential search process, and opportunities for community engagement will be shared here as it becomes available.

Throughout this process, Columbia remains committed to its mission and to a thoughtful transition that honors the Seminary’s history while preparing for its future.
